The Wichita Police Department has started a new training program to help officers in dealing with critical situations.

The program is called Integrated Communications and Tactics (ICAT), and it was developed by the Police Executive Research Forum, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C.   It is being taught in police departments across the U.S.

The program uses an evidence-based approach to use-of-force training, giving officers the options they need to defuse a range of critical incidents successfully and safely.  It focuses on situations involving persons in crisis and people who are unarmed or armed with weapons other than firearms.   The program has a critical decision-making model that helps officers assess situations, make safe and effective decisions, and document and learn from their actions.

The program is being provided to all WPD members at the Law Enforcement Training Center at Wichita State University.
