Firefighters in and around Sedgwick County will have access to more training opportunities.
The Heavy Urban Rescue Training Facility, or HURT, features a number of training props to help firefighters prepare for real-life events. They include a rail car, a highway trailer, and a pipe rack donated and built by area businesses. Officials held a ceremony Friday to recognize the new training site.
Until now, the Wichita Fire Department could only send one or two firefighters out of state facilities to get this kind of training. Officials said this will save time and money, allowing firefighters statewide to receive the same training without having to fly or take several days off of work.
The site can be modified for different scenarios, and firefighters can also train in inclement weather–which was not possible at other facilities.
