The Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard has announced the birth of a baby Pygmy Hippopotamus.
The male calf weighed only 13 pounds at birth, and he was born December 14th to parents Posie and Pluto, and this was their fourth calf. Park officials said Posie and Pluto came to Tanganyika in 2014 from different zoological facilities in Florida.
In a press release, park officials said the birth of this new calf brings hope for preserving critically endangered Pygmy hippos, with fewer than 3,000 known individuals worldwide. Park visitors will be able to see the Pygmy Hippo family in their habitat during the park’s operating season from March through November.
