The Wichita Park and Recreation Department is working with students from Southeast High School to plant trees in a local park.
The city will be planting 700 trees in Alice Wall Memorial Park at 4506 South Doris. The park sits along the west edge of the M.S. “Mitch” Mitchell Floodway in southwest Wichita.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, November 2nd, 100 students from Southeast High School will begin planting trees in the park, and they will be supervised by the Park and Recreation Forestry Team. The 700 trees were grown in the Forestry Division’s nursery and they consist of 12 different tree species, mainly different types of oaks and bald cypress trees. The planting is a delayed celebration of Arbor Day, which is in April each year. The fall is considered to be an ideal time to plant trees in Kansas.
The project is part of a long-range program to expand the city’s tree canopy on public land, and it’s part of the city’s proposed tree policy that also encourages residents and businesses to plant trees on their properties.
