The Wichita Airport Authority is planning a full scale disaster exercise on Friday near Eisenhower National Airport.
The drill will begin at 9 a.m. at a location north of K-42, between runways 1L and 14. The scenario involves an aircraft declaring an in-air emergency due to an issue with the right landing gear. Upon landing, the landing gear fails and the aircraft crashes and comes to rest at the end of the runway. The exercise will test the response of the airport and emergency crews to this situation.
The FAA requires a full scale disaster exercise every three years. Disasters like the one involved in Friday’s exercise are rare and have never occurred in Wichita, but the drill will help agencies practice their response efforts.
During the drill, there will be simulated information posted on X (Twitter) under the hashtag #ICTdrill.
