Police in Kansas City, Missouri said a police officer and his K-9 partner were killed in a Wednesday night crash that also killed a pedestrian.
The officer was on patrol near Truman Road and Benton Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. when his patrol car was hit by another vehicle, and that caused a vehicle to hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, was declared dead at the scene, along with the police dog. The officer died later at a hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the patrol car had minor injuries, and the driver was taken into custody.
The police officer was identified as James Muhlbauer. He was a 20-year veteran of the Kansas City police department and he had been working with the K-9 unit for three years. The police dog, Champ, had served with the department for one year.
