Fire broke out at a west Wichita home late Tuesday morning, but a mother and child got out safely.
A second alarm was called in after crews saw flames coming from a detached garage at a home in the 2600 block of West Newell, in a neighborhood west of the intersection of Central and McLean. The fire caused some exterior damage to the home but did not get inside. The garage and carport were gutted by the fire.
The fire was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. The cause is under investigation.
